David is a former shareholder in Butzel Long, one of Michigan’s largest and most prestigious law firms. Dave served as one of Butzel’s Litigation Practice Group Managers. Prior to becoming a business litigation lawyer, Dave was an automotive account executive for two major steel corporations and was responsible for the sales and marketing of $175 million in steel products to North American automobile manufacturers.
David concentrates his litigation practice in class actions, dealer/distributor/franchise litigation, business contract disputes, environmental nuisance claims, employment litigation, life insurance litigation, trade secrets disputes, non-compete litigation and business acquisition related claims.
Dave is licensed to practice in Michigan and North Carolina. He is a member of the American, Michigan and Federal Bar Associations and is a past sub-committee chairperson for the Defense Research Institute. He has served as a lead trial counsel before sixteen Circuit Courts throughout Michigan in addition to practicing in the Michigan Court of Appeals in numerous cases. He has argued twice before the Michigan Supreme Court in Stevens v McLouth, 433 Mich 365 (1989) (establishing liability standards in employment discrimination) and Monroe Beverage v The Stroh Brewery Company, 454 Mich 41 (1997) (establishing limitations under the Liquor Control Act).
Dave’s trial practice is national in scope. He has served as lead counsel in United States District Courts for the Eastern and Western Districts of Michigan, Northern and Southern Districts of Texas, Northern District of Ohio, Southern District of Florida, Western District of Oklahoma, Western District of Arkansas, District Court of Massachusetts, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth and Tenth Judicial Circuits. His trial practice has also involved the lead litigation role in the state courts of California, Ohio, Illinois, Maryland and Tennessee. Dave has also conducted internal corporate investigations and represented clients in FTC/Justice Department price fixing actions. David has served as lead counsel in many commercial arbitration disputes in private arbitrations, and before the American Arbitration Association and JAMS. He was selected by the Super Lawyers annual publication in 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 as one of Michigan’s top business litigation lawyers.
